KS2 sun safety lesson plan: Pupils prepare to travel to a destination with a VERY HIGH UV Index. Completing the Sun Safe Passport mission set by the Sun Safe Squad, including a written pledge, reinforces the importance of using all Five S Golden Rules of Sun Safety consistently and in combination to keep safe.
UV INDEX LESSON & CLASS MONITOR ACTIVITY
Teach pupils about the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation and why checking the UV Index each day is an important sun safety habit in schools. Includes a whole-class presentation, UV Index monitoring display posters, and a ‘design a UV monitor badge’ activity, encouraging pupils to become classroom UV Monitors and help remind their classmates to stay sun safe.

Written by Skcin, the wonderful rhyming story of ‘George the Sun Safe Superstar’ is an absolute favourite with primary school children of all ages! Complemented by a question-and-answer discussion-based lesson plan and backed up with a wide range of activities and worksheets - the whole class can identify with his journey and learn about the importance of Sun Safety.

Watch, listen and learn with the fabulous, animated version of the ‘George the Sun Safe Superstar’ rhyming story. Voiced by former singer and TV presenter Jenny Frost, the story of George is beautifully bought to life. As with the book, the animation is backed up with a question-and-answer discussion-based lesson plan and complemented by a series of activities below.
SUN SAFETY ACTIVITY - COOTIE CATCHER
Reinforce children’s knowledge of sun safety through play with the Sun Safe Schools Cootie Catcher. Following instructions provided, pupils can work together to test their friends’ and family’s sun safety knowledge. Inspired by the ancient art of origami (paper folding) and often known as a fortune teller, the Cootie Catcher is a classic playground favourite.
SUN SAFETY ACTIVITY - I SPY SHADE
Develop pupils’ understanding of the sun and shade, including how shade can come from both natural and man-made sources and how it moves throughout the day. This engaging outdoor investigation encourages pupils to find, observe and record shade around the school grounds while reinforcing how shade can act as an effective barrier.
